Vinesh Phogat retired from wrestling after her controversial exit from the Paris Olympics 2024. However, she recently announced her comeback, keeping in mind the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. However, before that, one of the major steps for the star Indian wrestler would have been to participate in the Asian Games 2026. However, she will be not be able to take part in the continental tournament that will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. Her journey to represent the nation once again has been abruptly halted, not by an opponent on the mat but by a controversial set of new eligibility criteria and a deepening rift with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Why Vinesh Phogat Will Not Be Able To Take Part In Asian Games 2026

At the heart of Vinesh Phogat’s exclusion from the Asian Games is a sweeping rule changing the eligibility to take part in the trials. Under the WFI’s newly mandated framework, participation in the selection trials is strictly limited to medal winners from three specific domestic competitions: the 2025 Senior National Wrestling Championship in Ahmedabad, the 2026 Senior Federation Cup in Ghaziabad, and the Under-20 National Wrestling Championship.

The federation has made it explicitly clear that historical achievements and past international glory hold no weight in this cycle. For Phogat, who was on maternity leave during the 2025 Nationals and has not competed professionally since her heartbreaking disqualification for being 100 grams overweight at the Paris 2024 Olympics, these rules act as an insurmountable barrier.

The timing of the federation's announcement was particularly devastating. Phogat had been eyeing the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, as her official comeback vehicle. Scheduled for May 10-12, 2026, the event was to be her first appearance in 20 months and her debut in the 57 kg category.

Despite her hopes that a strong performance in Gonda would put her back in the national reckoning, a WFI circular effectively dashed those dreams by confirming that the Ranking Tournament is not an eligible event for Asian Games selection. This move effectively sidelines the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist from the upcoming tournament.

In a previous interaction,Vinesh Phogatstrongly alleged that her lack of recent competition is not a mere coincidence, but the result of deliberate roadblocks. She previously raised alarms about the WFI systematically attempting to block her return, claiming she was met with a closed registration portal when trying to enter the Gonda tournament. It was only after she went public with her grievances that the federation processed her entry on the final deadline day.

The standoff grew even more bitter when Phogat questioned the choice of Gonda as a venue, labelling it the stronghold of former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Expressing fears of "biased officiating," she went as far as to state that the government would be responsible if any "untoward incident" happened to her or her team, alleging that the former president's influence could still control mat chairmen and point scoring.
