Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday changed his X profile picture to an image commemorating Operation Sindoor. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. Tweeting about it, PM Modi wrote: "A year ago, our armed forces displayed unparalleled courage, precision and resolve during #OperationSindoor. They gave a fitting response to those who dared to attack innocent Indians at Pahalgam. The entire nation salutes our forces for their valour."
He added: "Operation Sindoor reflected India’s firm response against terrorism and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security. It also highlighted the professionalism, preparedness and coordinated strength of our armed forces. At the same time, it showcased the growing jointness among our forces and underlined the strength that India’s quest for self-reliance in the defence sector has brought to our national security.
"Today, a year later, we remain as steadfast as ever in our resolve to defeat terrorism and destroy its enabling ecosystem."
As part of the Operation Sindoor, India carried out airstrikes on nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, eliminating at least 100 terrorists.
The strikes at the terror camps included the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) headquarters at Bahawalpur, the Lashkar-e-Taiba's base at Muridke and terrorist infrastructure in Mehmoona Joya in Sialkot, Sawai Nala and Syed Na Bilal in Muzaffarabad, Gulpur and Abbas in Kotli, Barnala in Bhimber, and Sarjal.
The action triggered a rapid escalation in tensions with Pakistan launching retaliatory strikes on military and civilian sites, which were thwarted by the Indian military.
The hostilities ended with an understanding on halting the military actions on May 10 following talks over the hotline between army officials of the two sides.
Following the three-day conflict, India said that it will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail by Islamabad. "Operation Sindoor is India's policy against terrorism. This operation has drawn a new line, it is the new normal," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an address to the nation last year.
PM Modi said that the May 7 operation sent a clear message to Pakistan: India will not hesitate to take decisive action. When the time comes, he added, India will make no distinction between terrorists and those who support or enable them — a pointed reference to Pakistan’s continued backing of terror launchpads on its soil.
