China has become the second country after the United States to develop and operate two different fifth-generation stealth fighter jets. While the J-20 remains its heavy air superiority fighter, the new Shenyang J-35 (J-35A land-based version) is now emerging as a key export platform, with Pakistan expected to be its first international customer.
The J-35A is a twin-engine, multi-role stealth fighter developed by China’s Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It is an advanced evolution of the earlier FC-31 technology demonstrator.
MajorBoostforPakistan Air Force
Pakistan is reportedly finalizing a deal to acquire around 40 J-35A aircraft. This would make the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) the first foreign operator of Chinese fifth-generation fighters. Deliveries could start as early as late 2026 or early 2027.This acquisition would significantly strengthen Pakistan’s air power. The PAF already operates Chinese-origin JF-17 Thunder and J-10C fighters. Adding the J-35A would give Pakistan a mix of affordable 4.5-generation jets and high-end stealth platforms, improving its ability to operate in contested airspace.
Strategic Advantagesfor Pakistan:
For China, exporting the J-35A strengthens its defense partnership with Pakistan and demonstrates growing confidence in its aviation industry. For Pakistan, it represents a major modernization leap.India is expected to closely monitor this development, as it could shift the aerial balance in South Asia and may accelerate India’s own next-generation fighter programs.
