Peconic Bay Medical Center has once again earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, marking the second consecutive grading cycle in which the Riverhead hospital received the organization’s highest rating for patient safety.
The spring 2026 grade is based on more than 30 measures of patient safety, including preventable medical errors, hospital-acquired infections and protocols designed to protect patients from harm, according to the hospital.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit watchdog organization that assigns letter grades to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals nationwide.
“This continued recognition speaks to the consistency and dedication of our team in delivering safe, high-quality care every day,” Peconic Bay Medical Center President Dr. Amy Loeb said in a statement. “Patient safety is an ongoing commitment, and earning an ‘A’ grade again reflects the strong systems we have in place and the accountability our staff brings to every patient interaction.”
The recognition comes as PBMC continues work on several expansion projects intended to increase access to specialized care in eastern Suffolk County.
The hospital recently opened the Bill and Ruth Ann Harnisch Neurosciences Center, which is expected to begin seeing patients in mid- to late May. The center is intended to expand access to advanced neurological and stroke services.
PBMC is also developing the Emilie Roy Corey Center for Women & Infants, which is expected to open in summer 2027. The center will expand maternal and newborn care in the region, according to the hospital.
PBMC said both projects were made possible through donor support and community contributions.
The hospital has also been named one of Newsweek’s best hospitals in New York State, received 2026 specialty excellence awards for coronary intervention and pulmonary care from Healthgrades, and was listed by Healthgrades among the 100 best hospitals in the country for gastrointestinal care.
Peconic Bay Medical Center is a 144-bed nonprofit hospital in Riverhead. It joined Northwell Health in 2016.
