One of the biggest decisions pet owners face is how to care for their animals while they’re away.
According to Ann Leavy, owner of Pooch’s B&B, a luxury boutique boarding facility in Lake Grove, the right choice depends on a pet’s personality, safety needs, and an owner’s comfort level. For many pet parents, in-home pet sitting feels like the most natural solution. Animals remain in familiar surroundings, maintaining their routine and avoiding the stress of a new environment, which can be especially beneficial for older animals, cats, or pets prone to anxiety. While it can be a great fit, Leavy notes there are factors to consider, depending on your pet.
“Dogs have the potential to run away when they stay in people’s homes,” she explains, noting that open doors, unsecured yards, or simple human error can create unsafe situations. Even in a pet’s own home, consistency and reliability can be a concern. Leavy recalls hiring a dog walker who failed to show up, leaving her worried about her pet’s medication and care.
There are also logistical considerations with pet sitting, such as missed visits or simple oversights. One client told Leavy that a sitter refilled food and water bowls but forgot to place them back on the floor, a small mistake with potentially serious consequences.
Boarding facilities, on the other hand, can offer structured, supervised environments, though not all are created equal. Traditional kennels can be noisy and overstimulating, which may stress some animals. Leavy designed Pooch’s B&B to address these concerns, focusing on calm, private suites, continuous supervision, and a balance of comfort and safety. Behavioral assessments, including required trial stays, help ensure that pets are comfortable before longer visits.
“Dogs naturally cannot relax in an environment where they see and hear everything,” she says. Her facility uses one-way glass and individualized playtime to reduce stress, along with 24-hour staffing and close monitoring.
Cleanliness and air quality are also key priorities. Pooch’s B&B was intentionally designed for a higher level of sanitation than typical boarding environments, with materials and layouts that allow for thorough cleaning.
“It’s immaculate,” Leavy says, noting that visitors frequently comment on the cleanliness. Advanced air systems, including UV sanitizers integrated into HVAC units and additional units in each suite, continuously disinfect the space.
Safety is another benefit of purpose-built boarding facilities, where pets are in a controlled environment without access to common household hazards like garbage, wires, or unsecured exits.
Cost can be another factor. In-home pet sitting can vary widely, while boarding facilities may come at a higher nightly rate due to staffing and amenities. For many pet owners, the decision comes down to balancing the budget with peace of mind. Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
