Jacob Furino, a senior and special-needs student at Bellport High School, recently asked junior Avery Loeffler to prom. Braun asked her to prom at their Unified basketball game held at the high school on April 28 holding a sign that read; “Want to take a SHOT at prom with me?”
“My girl Avery is my friend and is very special to me,” Jacob said of his promposal. “I’m happy and excited to go to prom with her. I will miss everyone at Bellport High School because I care about them and they care about me. They are all my friends forever!”
According to his mother Laura Braun, Avery is an incredible person who has been by his side and even prepped him for the “Bellport’s Got Talent” show which was held on May 1. Jacob received the “Fan Favorite” trophy along with an abundance of support from everyone who attended.
“I am so moved by the amount of love and support Jacob, myself, and my other son Michael have received. Jacob has this light inside him that truly lights up the world, especially mine! The people and moments Jacob has experienced are unforgettable, and I know he will remember the people and these special moments for the rest of his life,” said Braun. It is all thanks to people like Avery, among other peers, school staff, and the South Country community. I could never thank them all enough for taking care of Jacob like he was their own. Jacob is who he is today because of his family, friends, and the South Country community, and of course the light inside him that shines so bright. From the bottom of my bursting heart, thank you all.”
Jacob, she said, is an inspiration to many in the community, especially when it comes to sports and putting yourself out there.
“Jacob and I became friends this year through the peer elective classes. He’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met and never fails to make me laugh! I love how he never lets anything hold him back and is always willing to try new things,” Avery said of her friend. “He’s truly a great friend and brings so much positivity to everyone around him.”
And, by the way, Avery said “yes!”
“I am excited to make memories at prom with him and I’m honored to be his date!” she added.
