Sheriffs served a search warrant Wednesday morning at the home of Susan Flores, the mother of convicted killer Paul Flores, in the decades-old Kristin Smart murder case.
The raid took place at the Arroyo Grande residence as part of what authorities described as an ongoing investigation.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said the warrant was authorized by a Superior Court judge but did not immediately release further details about what prompted the new activity.
The development comes nearly 30 years after 19-year-old Kristin Smart disappeared in 1996 while attending California Polytechnic State University.
Paul Flores was convicted in 2022 of her murder, though Smart’s body has never been found. District Attorney Dan Dow said Wednesday that officials remain focused on locating her remains.
“Since the jury convicted Paul Flores for the murder of Kristin Smart, the District Attorney’s Office has continued working in coordination with the Sheriff’s Office to fulfill our shared commitment to the Smart family and this community: to bring Kristin home,” Dow said.
He added that authorities are using “every lawful tool available” in the ongoing effort.
