The Town of Oyster Bay and Massapequa School District hosted theSpecial Olympics Spring Gamesin partnership with Special Olympics New York at Berner Middle School on Saturday, May 2, providing hundreds of athletes wth the opportunity to participate in Olympic-style competition.

The games included a full day of competitive track and field events for over 700 athletes from 58 teams, supported by more than 300 coaches. The athletes dedicated months to training, which culminated in the games in Massapequa.

“The Special Olympics Spring Games are one of the most special events we host each year,” Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “This event is nothing short of inspiring, showcasing amazing athletes who embody determination, courage, and pure joy. It’s an honor to support an event that celebrates inclusion, perseverance, and the power of sport.”

“This is a day that celebrates not only athletes and their achievements, but the very best of the human spirit, perseverance, joy and inclusion,” Massapequa Superintendent Will. Brennan said. “Our athletes are here to show us what it truly means to lead with heart. Here in Massapequa, we take great pride in who we are – a community grounded in tradition, strengthened by unity and defined by how we show up for one another, without hesitation and without limits.”

Special Olympics New York hosts thousands of local, regional, and state-level competitions throughout the year, which provide inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics has its annual Polar Plunge event with the Town of Oyster Bay in March.

The2025Special Olympics Spring Games were held in the town and at Plainedge High School.
