Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace and Trident hotels were placed on high alert after an anonymous threat call was received around 9:30 pm on Tuesday (May 5). Police swiftly traced the caller to Navi Mumbai resident Santosh Sawant, who has since been detained. A non-cognizable offence has been registered at Colaba police station.
Police teams rushed to the spot and security personnel carried out checks to ensure the safety of guests, staff and visitors.
The Mumbai Police said that the caller was quickly traced and has been taken to the police station. The authorities are investigating and questioning Santosh Sawant to understand the motive behind the call.
Moreover, no suspicious object has been found after the security checks. Police have urged the residents not to panic and assured that all necessary safety checks are being taken.
The Press Club of Mumbai received an email threat last month about bombs being planted at several places. After receiving the threat, Mumbai Police immediately reached the spot and sealed the entire area. The bomb disposal squad reached the spot with dog squad and conducted a search operation inside the Press Club. As a precautionary measure, all the members and staff were evacuated from the building. The squad searched every corner of the building but did not find any suspicious object.
According to preliminary information, the sender of the email has been identified as Neerja Ajmal Khan. The sender claimed to have planted at least 42 "poison gas" devices at the Press Club. The sender also stated that the alleged devices were intended solely to cause property damage. The accused also called for the building to be evacuated. The cyber cell started an investigation to find out where the email came from and identify the sender.
