The Riverhead Police Department has a new probationary police officer. Officer Daniel Concannon was sworn in by Chief Ed Frost at the start of Tuesday’s Town Board meeting after the board unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the new hire.

Concannon previously served the police department as a traffic control officer, a part-time police officer and a seasonal police officer. He has graduated from the Suffolk County Police Academy. He has been stationed at the front desk in Riverhead Town Hall. Board members yesterday praised his professional and pleasant demeanor at the desk.

“We have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Dan, as he’s been at the front desk, waiting patiently for this special day,” Council Member Joann Waski said, calling him a “great addition to the department.”

Council Member Denise Merrifield agreed. “It’s been wonderful having you here, greeting us every day. How wonderful you are to all the residents that come through the door,” she said.

“We’re going to miss you at the desk,” Council Member Bob Kern told him.”

Council Member Ken Rothwell said Concannon is “a true gentleman” and said Concannon is an example of what community policing is all about.

“Daniel, thank you for choosing Riverhead. I know that you would have had many options as a police officer,” Supervisor Jerry Halpin told Concannon. “Your family has to be proud. We’re very proud of you,” he said, adding Riverhead is lucky to have Concannon join its police force.
