Two late-night explosion incidents on Tuesday (May 5) in Punjab, one near a sensitive cantonment zone in Amritsar andanother in Jalandhar, have triggered security concerns and a sharp political face-off over law and order in the state. While no casualties were reported in either case, the proximity of the incidents to key locations and their timing have raised questions, with opposition leaders alleging lapses and even a possible cover-up. Authorities have launched parallel investigations as forensic teams work to determine the exact nature of the blasts.
Amritsar SP Aditya Warrier told ANI, "At around 10.50 pm, the police received a complaint about a sound of a blast near Khassa cantonment... The police team reached the spot along with the senior officials of the army residing in the cantonment. The BDS team was also called, which conducted a check there. The FSL team gathered the evidence, and it has been sent for sampling and testing. We are checking how many blasts have occurred and how."
The Bomb Disposal Squad conducted a sweep of the area, while the Forensic Science Laboratory team collected samples. Officials said the material has been sent for analysis to determine the cause and nature of the blast.
Jalandhar Police Commissioner, Dhanpreet Kaur told ANI, "At around 8, a scooty parked near the gate suddenly caught fire... We are taking inputs from the BSF... Preliminarily, the scooty belongs to a man who works here, and when he came here, it caught fire... We want to inspect this incident from all angles..."
Though no injuries were reported, the incident added to the sense of unease and quickly drew political reactions.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia alleged a cover-up, stating, "Just connect the dots... Just like grenade attacks are often downplayed as tyre bursts, here too the claim of a scooty blast suggests the start of a cover-up operation. Was the Commissioner able to complete the investigation so quickly? Has the forensic team already submitted its report? The cover-up seems to have begun the moment the blast occurred."
Punjab BJP General Secretary Parminder Singh Brar said, "Blast near BSF HQ in Jalandhar is a chilling reminder of the collapsing law & order in Punjab. A delivery scooter explosion in a crowded area shows how dangerously unsafe public spaces have become. The Aam Aadmi Party Punjab government must be held accountable; governance cannot be replaced by optics and theatrics. Punjab cannot afford this failure. People deserve security, not excuses."
Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa added, "The explosion in Jalandhar is deeply alarming. Incidents like these point to serious lapses in safety and vigilance. The government must stop reacting after the fact and start taking proactive, visible steps to secure lives and restore public confidence. Wish a speedy recovery to the injured BSF jawan."
Investigations in both cases are ongoing as agencies work to establish whether the incidents are linked.
