The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Political Affairs Committee has unanimously backed extending support to theTamilaga Vettri Kazhagam(TVK) to form a “secular” government in Tamil Nadu, sources said on Wednesday. An official announcement from the Indian National Congress is expected today, when the party’s Political Affairs Committee is scheduled to meet at Sathyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai at 9:30 am. According to sources, a majority ofCongressMLAs are in favour of backing a TVK-led government.

However, the party is expected to place key conditions for its support. These include a demand for two cabinet berths, along with significant roles such as chairmanships of boards and corporations. Congress is also likely to insist that TVK refrain from seeking support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or any constituents of the NDA to form the government.

If these conditions are accepted, Congress believes it will be in a stronger position to persuade its allies, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), to extend support to TVK as well.

Earlier, senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal had indicated that actor-turned-politician Vijay had reached out to the Congress leadership seeking support to form the next government in the state.

The Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections, winning 108 seats, 10 short of the majority mark required to form the government. The Congress, which secured five seats, has not yet taken a final decision on extending support.

Vijay won from both constituencies he contested, Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East, and will have to vacate one seat as per Election Commission rules. Party sources indicate he is likely to retain Perambur and give up Tiruchirappalli East.

If that happens, TVK’s strength will drop to 107. The effective voting strength may further reduce to 106 once the Speaker is elected, as the Speaker does not vote during a confidence motion.

In that scenario, TVK would need the support of at least 12 additional MLAs to cross the majority mark of 118.
