Jalandhar:An explosion was reported near the Border Security Force (BSF) chowk in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Tuesday (May 5). The explosion occurred in an actuary. Following the blast, the vehicle caught fire. The incident created panic among people present at the scene.

According to eyewitnesses, flames engulfed the Activa immediately after the explosion occurred. After the blast, people alerted the police. Upon receiving information about the incident, the police administration and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot. The entire area was cordoned off. One person has been detained in connection with the blast. He is reportedly the owner of the scooter.

An operation to douse the flames was initiated. The cause of the explosion remains unknown. The police are investigating the matter and are scrutinising footage from nearby CCTV cameras. The person who detained for questioning is the son of a former BSF official.

“Tonight, around 8 PM, an Activa suddenly caught fire near BSF Chowk. This Activa belongs to Gurpreet Singh. Gurpreet Singh is currently with us and is being questioned. As soon as any facts emerge, they will be shared,” said Dhanpreet Kaur, Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar. Fortunately, there have been no reports of any injuries or casualties in this incident.

CCTV footage captured the exact moment of the blast. In the footage, it could be seen that a parked scooter suddenly explodes near the BSF chowk.

A huge fireball and a thick envelope of smoke billowed out from the scooter after the loud explosion. A man could also be seen running from the spot following the explosion. Other vehicles were also plying on the road when the incident took place. The traffic in the area was disrupted after the blast.

The police are probing all the angles, including involvement of any terror group.
