Hyundai Rotem, the defense and train subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, said Wednesday it has begun commercial operations of its high-speed train in Uzbekistan.

The train has been deployed on a 1,020-kilometer route linking the Uzbek capital of Tashkent and Khiva, an ancient Silk Road city in western Uzbekistan, making it the longest railway line in the Central Asian country.

The commercial launch follows a 270 billion-won ($185.3 million) contract Hyundai Rotem signed with Uzbekistan Railways in 2024.

It marks the first commercial operation of high-speed trains developed using Korean technology since the introduction of the KTX train with French assistance in 2004.

Hyundai Rotem said the new rail service is expected to improve Uzbekistan's transportation infrastructure by cutting travel time between Tashkent and Khiva roughly in half to around seven hours.
