Before leaving for the conference, Rubio told reporters in the US that Europe ‘want to know where we’re going’

At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told European allies that “our destiny will be intertwined with yours”.

“We want Europe to be strong. We believe that Europe must survive. Because the two great wars of the last century serve for us as history’s constant reminder that ultimately our destiny is and will always be intertwined with yours,” he said.

Rubio is the highest-ranking US speaker at the annual security conference, breaking years of tradition in which Washington sent its vice-president.

Rubio called for a new alliance that would “unshackle our ingenuity, our creativity and the dynamic spirit to build a new Western century”.

“We do not seek to separate but to revitalise an old friendship and renew the greatest civilisation in human history”, he said.

Addressing the issue of supply chains, he said: “The loss of our supply chain sovereignty was not a function a prosperous and healthy system of global trade, it was foolish ... Together we can take back supply chains.”
